Objectives
The wide-ranging expertise of the staff and the high proportion of course options within the degree mean that you have real choice. You can choose to specialise in particular periods or styles of history (eg: the Medieval World, or Ethnicity and Gender) or you can pursue a number of new and challenging approaches to the past. Whatever your interests – political, cultural, intellectual, social, economic, or international – you will find courses here that capture your imagination.

Entry requirements
Entry Requirements * A/AS Levels: You will normally be required to secure three A-levels, though two AS levels may be considered in place of one A-level. General Studies is accepted as one of three A-levels. Our conditional offer for Single Subject History is normally ABB. * For English and History our conditional offer is normally ABB. * For Contemporary History our conditional offer is normally BBB. * For Single Honours History and for joint honours degrees including History we prefer History at A-level, though this is not a prerequisite for Contemporary History. * Your application will be considered by one of our team of experienced admissions tutors. We normally make offers without interview based on the information you present on your UCAS application form. If you receive an offer, you will be invited to a Visit Day, at some time between December 2008 and April 2009. * GCSE: No specific requirements. * Access to HE course: Pass, with at least the requisite credits at level 3. * European Baccalaureate: Pass with 70% overall. * International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 30 points, including at least one subject with 6 points at higher level. * BTEC Nationals: Tariff points equivalent to our A level offers are required. * Leicester Progression Accord: a number of degrees in the School welcome the Progression Accord as a valuable addition to post-16 studies, and a reduced offer of one grade at A level will be made to applicants offering the full Progression Accord. * Other Qualifications: We welcome applications with non-standard qualifications. You will be considered individually, on your own merits, but we suggest that you contact us in advance of making an application. Other national and international qualifications welcomed. * Mature students are welcomed: Mature students often have different qualifications from recent school leavers, but we look at each case individually on its own merits. Mature student applicants usually have a recent Access to HE certificate. * Second Year Entry: Possible for those with advanced qualifications compatible with our degree structure. * These degrees are not available on a part-time basis.

BA English and History
Programme
First Year
Students take half their modules in the English department and half in the School of Historical Studies. In English, they take modules on Renaissance Drama, The History of the English Language, and Approaches to Literature. In Historical Studies, they take modules on modern history, early modern history, and Making History.
Second Year
Students continue to take half their modules in English and half in History. In English, they take Chaucer, Medieval Literature, and Early Modern Literature. In History, they choose two modules from Varieties of History – the study of concepts such as class, race and gender, as a framework for more specialised options. In addition they choose an optional module (topics include: The Medieval English Nobility; Reflecting on Genocide; Imperialism and Decolonisation). Students wishing to do a third year dissertation in History are obliged to take the Historical Research Methods module in place of the optional module.
Third Year
Students must do a minimum of 40 credits in each subject. After that, there is a choice of modules, dissertations and special subjects available. Students must do a dissertation in either English or History.
