Course Description:
BA English Language and French
Programme
The course aims to produce graduates with a good level of linguistic and transferable skills in one modern language and another subject area. Great emphasis is placed on the development of language competence, transferable skills and the historical, political, social and cultural background of the languages studied (eg literature or film). The course is structured along three strands:
-The Language Strand (a graded system building up and enhancing language skills, accuracy and fluency)
-The Applied Bilingual Strand (modules focusing on practical skills into and out of the foreign language introducing transferable skills, such as translating and interpreting to and from English)
-The Area Studies Strand (modules studying the historical, political, cultural and literary background of the language)
These are combined with other subject areas and are also available to native speakers of French or Spanish. The course does not include a compulsory period abroad, but the option of spending an academic year abroad (whether studying or working) exists and is actively encouraged. For post-A level students, there is also the opportunity of spending an accredited semester abroad (based on linguistic criteria).
