    Designing products offers exciting opportunities for creativity, ingenuity and in using new technologies. You can learn about materials, manufacturing, CAD, design methodologies including IDEO's world-leading innovation process. The course encompasses a broad range of industries including consumer and electronic products; leisure and sport; toy design; retail and furniture; and many others.
  • Entry requirements
    Entry requirements Art and Design Foundation, BTEC, National Diploma or equivalent accepted. Normally applicants attend an interview and present their portfolio. Alternatively, A level/AS level/Vocational A level: normally 220-300 points.

    Programme

    Three Dimensional Design Product Design Year 1

        * Introductory studio projects and design culture seminars
        * Choose from a range of projects reflecting the variety of design topics available in the specialist fields
        * Learn how to think innovatively, exploring cultural, technical and market issues to find ways to improve the quality of life through design
        * This field includes consumer, domestic and electronic products, lighting and furniture and public design/outdoor products

    Three Dimensional Design Product Design Year 2

        * Study evolves through practical projects linked to a design culture programme, giving you a thorough grounding in the specialist concerns relevant to product designers
        * You negotiate and choose your project topics; increasingly you are able to specialise or exploit your creative ideas
        * In year two you can reinforce and enhance understanding through project work; develop skills and competence; broaden exploration and knowledge; advance creativity and evaluation techniques; undertake open modules/projects in Art & Design; and build a folio of special interests or processes

    Three Dimensional Design Product Design Year 3

        * Gain an insight into external/professional contexts, allowing you to process and manage your work, acquiring a diverse knowledge and relevant skills
        * Develop a major project, personal portfolio, a final exhibition and participate in national events such as the New Designers Exhibition at the Business Design Centre, London
        * You are encouraged to take responsibility, organising  your projects to assimilate real world and professional concerns; create links to design culture; produce a major project and dissertation; take decisions/plan/manage activities and outputs; and participate in external competitions/events
