  • Objectives
    This degree enables you, as a registered nurse, to develop the knowledge and skills required to work as a nurse practitioner in the acute or primary care sectors. After finishing this course there are career opportunities in walk-in centres, accident and emergency departments, personal medical services, primary care including general practice, and at NHS Direct. You must have appropriate access to supervised practice to undertake the course. This is obtained through sponsorship or support from your employer. Self-funding is possible in some circumstances. The degree prepares you to build on your previous nursing experience by developing your skills in reflective practice, teamworking and management to help you to become an autonomous practitioner.
  • Entry requirements
    All applicants must be registered nurses with a live NMC registration. You must be registered on the appropriate part/s of the NMC register for your chosen area of work, and have at least two years post-registration experience in the area where you intend to work as a nurse practitioner. Appropriate level 2 credit is necessary for direct entry to the degree.

    Course structure

    The Nurse Practitioner course has eight modules at level 3 (Honours level) only, consisting of shared, core and specialist modules. There is some choice in the modules studied.

    Level 3 builds on your earlier concepts and experiences to meet the professional requirements in nursing practice. You will be able to develop and demonstrate your ability to analyse and solve problems based on evidence, as applied to your specialist area of practice. Over this year, you will develop increasing confidence and competence in practice, including your ability to assess and manage care for a range of patients and clients through reflective practice.
