Course Description
Designed for students wishing to progress to degree and other HE courses in Business Studies, Economics, Accounts, European Studies, International Business and other related business subjects. Modules include English, Study Skills, Business Organisation/Management, European Studies, Accounts & Finance and IT. You will receive help and advice with your UCAS application. Students who have completed this course have gone on to study at a range of Universities. You do not need any formal qualifications for this course but you must be 19 years old when the course starts. You will need to attend an interview/assessment.
What does the course lead to?
Students have gone on to university degrees and other Higher Education courses in Accountancy, Economics, Management Studies, European Studies, Travel and Tourism, Business Studies for sport or fashion, Management and many others. The Access Certificate is nationally recognised as an alternative to A Levels.
What does the course involve?
Accounts and finance (including computerised accounts): financial and management accounting techniques for business. Business organisations and the environment: business organisation, markets and marketing, human resource management, management science. European studies: an historical background to the European Community, the Single European Market, the Euro, Europe and the world economy. Information technology: word processing, database, spreadsheets, principles of computing, the Internet, specialised applications. Communication and study skills: reading and comprehension, summary skills, essay writing, business communication including report writing, UCAS applications.
What are the facilities and equipment like?
College Services
Skills Centres, with plenty of visual research material, including books, slides, journals, CD ROMS and Internet access are available for your use. Trained staff are able to help you with careers and educational guidance (including help with applications to university). Additional help with English and Maths is available if you need extra tuition in these subjects and a counselling service is provided for students needing personal support. We have a day nursery on site at Wornington for 2-5 year-olds, and reserved places at a nursery close to Hortensia Road. Help with childcare costs may also be available through the Access Fund.
Specific Learning Difficulties and Disabilities
We are committed to improving access to learning for all our students. Please tell us if you have any learning difficulty or disability that may affect your progress on the course. We will be able to make arrangements to accommodate your individual needs. For example, the college has hearing loop facilities at all centres. Holland Park and Hortensia have some ground floor wheelchair access. Our Wornington and Marlborough Centres now have lift access to most rooms.
How much should I study outside class?
There are regular homework assignments, so time for private study is essential.
What books and equipment do I need?
You will need to purchase a number of textbooks.
