    General information

    The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services is a one year course and is designed to give students the opportunity to gain a realistic ideas of what a career in the Public Services can offer.  If you are thinking of a career in a Government organisation or any of the Public Services this course may be the one for you.  Students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of Public Services and will also gain knowledge of the industry from a wide range of speakers.

    To be successful in this industry, it is important to have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to communicate with a range of people, have a commitment to develop your own personal qualities, be enthusiastic, energetic and have a keen interest in developing skills and techniques.

    Course content

    The course covers the following units:

        * Uniformed Public Services Employment
        * Public Service Skills
        * Uniformed Public Service Fitness
        * Adventurous Activities & Teamwork for the Public Services
        * Land Navigation by Map & Compass
        * Expedition Skills

    Teaching and assessment

    This course is assessed through course work and internal verification assignment (IVA), continual internal assessments throughout the year and a number of assignments both written and practical.  Students are required to complete a portfolio (file) containing evidence of assignments, practical performance, presentations, group exercises and discussions.

    Teaching is through a series of lectures, group discussions and investigations, presentations from outside organisations, hands-on experience with different organisations and practical activities including team building exercises.A stringent fitness programme is also an integral part of the course.

    Students are given plenty of help and direction from staff and are encouraged to undertake their own research and additional reading.

    Progression

    On successful completion of the BTEC First Diploma at Merit grade or above and subject to a review, students can progress onto the BTEC National Diploma in Public Services.

    The course is a combination of theory and practical activities, and in order to succeed you will need a high level of discipline, stamina and the ability to communicate well.  You should also be highly motivated, enthusiastic and a good team player.

    A BTEC First Diploma in Public Services can develop the skills you need to start a career in the Armed Forces, Local Government Administration, Security or the Prison Service.
