    What does it include?
    This course is designed to provide an introduction to the technology and practice of carpentry and joinery. It represents a level 1-entry qualification. The course is for anyone joining or intending to join the construction industry. Students will study basic technical skills and practical competence in hand skills of carpentry.

    You will have access to a personal tutor to help you throughout the course and the College offers a comprehensive range of student services including learning and language support, guidance and counselling.
     
    What do I need to get onto it?
    You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills at interview. An interest in the construction industry is essential and employment within the industry at the time of application would be beneficial but not essential.
     
    Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 3
    You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing – for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
    Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 3
    You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.
     
    How will I be assessed?
    On-going practical tasks and course work assessments. You will gain a City & Guilds 6217-02 Basic Woodworking Skills qualification and Key Skills Literacy, Numeracy and Communication Level 1.
     
    Where does it lead?
    Wood Occupations Level 2 NVQ or Intermediate Construction Award and improved job prospects.
