Course Description:
General information
All ESOL courses at Bromley College are offered during the day (15 hours) and evening (6 hours) and they all lead to nationally recognised qualifications.
All full-time students will follow an English language course plus another course preparing them for work. Courses are offered at two sites - Rookery Lane, Bromley and The Hawthorn Learning Centre, Penge.
Course content
The main aim of ESOL is to improve your English through: • Lots of speaking practice • Writing tasks for everyday communication • Reading tasks for everyday communication • Listening practice • Grammar and vocabulary
The 15-hour day programme consists of:
• 8 hours classroom work • 1 hour workshop • 1 hour tutorial • 5 hours of IT and Numeracy (lower level) or vocational (higher level)
The 6-hour evening programme consists of classroom work and workshop.
Teaching and assessment
Classroom work combines speaking, listening, reading and writing with the use of IT and real-life materials.
All courses use the language laboratory in their workshops to gain confidence in IT skills and to encourage independent learning.
The tutorial programme offers continual support and guidance.
• All courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications.
• Regular exam practice takes place throughout the year.
• Regular homework is given.
Progression
All students can progress to a higher level of ESOL, a college vocational course or employment.
