  • Objectives
    This course aims to meet the needs of well qualified, new entrants to the teaching profession. It has been put together in response to a range of recent developments in the profession. The course has been designed for both Primary and Secondary specialists and aims to meet their needs and aspirations in terms of offering high quality education and training in preparation for entrance to the profession. Successful course participants will gain Qualified Teacher Status at the end of their first year of study continuing professional development for participants during their first two years in the teaching profession.

    The course offers the following features:

    The opportunity to study in a specialist area of education including special educational needs, inclusive education, educational psychology, counselling, school leadership and urban education.
    School based enquiry. This allows participants to base their study upon whole school and/or classroom based issues of relevance to themselves and their schools and with the capacity to improve aspects of their schools work.
    A dissertation based around the interests and needs of participants, their schools and students.
  • Entry requirements
    Entry requirements: Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admissions criteria of the University and of the School in at least one of the following areas: Maths and English at GCSE grade C or above or equivalent and a good honours degree from a University recognised by the School of Education (Secondary) GCSE grade C or above in English, maths and science (cadidiates born after 1.9.79). Will normally have a minimum of two A levels at grade C or above, or equivalent qualification, in national Curriculum subjects, preferably including either English, maths or science. A good honours degree from a university recognised by the School of Education, normally in a subject in which either English, maths or science constitutes 50% of the course content. Recent experience in a UK primary school, which should normally be a minimum of five days and must be completed before interview (primary).

    Module details

    The MA in Education consists of compulsory course units preparing Primary and Secondary teachers for their school classroom and wider professional work. Optional units are avialable in areas including, contemporary issues in education, psychology for education, inclusion and special education, counselling, school leadership and ICT. All students will complete school based enquiries and a dissertation or equivalent.

    Career opportunities

    On successful completion of year one participants will be qualified to enter the teaching profession. It is anticipated that the course will meet the continuing professional development needs of teachers in their early years in the teaching profession. This will contribute to the profiles of course participants offering them opportunities for career advancement within the teaching profession and in related areas of education.
