Entry Requirements:
Applicants must have reached the age of 16 before 1st September. There is no upper age limit, and mature applicants are welcomed. One GCSE at Grade C in an academic subject and at least another subject at Grade D, or BTEC Introductory Diploma at a merit level, or applicants with less than the above may be accepted on the basis of their performance in a diagnostic entry test.
Course Description:
The course is suitable for anyone wishing to pursue a career in Health Care or Social and Community Care. It is also suitable for staff currently employed in the Care sector who wish to gain a nationally recognised educational qualification in Caring. 6 Units are internally assessed by means of assignments, projects, presentations etc.

What you learn
The course is Institute-based. During the academic year students are required to complete 100 hours of placement experience. To obtain the BTEC First Diploma, a minimum of 6 Level 2 Units, 2 Compulsory (that must be covered) and 4 Optional Units must be passed.

Units studied are:
Compulsory
-Unit 1: Communication and Individual Rights
-Unit 2: Individual needs within Health and Social Care

Optional (4 units to be covered)
-Unit 3: Vocational Experience in a Health and Social Care Setting
-Unit 4: Cultural Diversity
-Unit 5: Understanding Body Systems
-Unit 6: Lifespan Development
-Unit 7: Therapeutic and Creative Activities
-Unit 8: Health and Social Care Services
-Unit 9: Influences of Diet on Health

Students wishing to pursue a career in this area need to achieve good standards of Literacy, Numeracy and ICT. For this reason, if you are under 19 years of age when you begin your course, you will be required to study these essential subjects.

What next?
The BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSE's at Grade A*-C.
Successful students may progress to the BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Health and Social Care, or may enter various employment within the Caring Sector.
Full time students may be also offered the opportunity to obtain relevant Health & Safety qualifications including: HSE First Aid at Work, RSM Basic Certificate in Health & Safety, RIPHH Primary Certificate in Food Hygiene, also Full time students will have the opportunity to gain a GCSE in English Language, and/or Maths, if they do not already have a Grade C.
Also Creative Activities Certificate and Drugs Awareness, 9 week course.

How is the course assessed?

6 of the units are internally assessed by means of assignments, projects, presentations etc. Tutorial support is an integral part of all Health and Social care courses and a planned programme of individual and group tutorials is offered.
