This modular degree scheme is designed to allow students to further their undergraduate interest in history, and to develop the skills and knowledge which they would need if they decided to undertake further research into the past. It combines training in research techniques and theoretical and historiographic analysis, with taught courses and a substantial dissertation. There is a choice of specialist modules covering a range of periods, matching the research interests of the teaching staff including: Ideas of power in the late Middle Ages; National identities in Britain and Ireland, 1660-1800; Identities and the Victorian city; A cultural history of Imperial Russia; The politics of the Labour Party. The dissertation (taken by those who proceed beyond the diploma) allows students to research a substantial topic of their own choosing, under supportive individual supervision.
