• Objectives
  Postgraduate programmes at Scarborough focus on the creation, study and documentation of contemporary practical performance in theatre, dance, live art and allied performance subjects. They offer opportunities for the integration of theory and independent practical exploration. Students are encouraged to develop individual philosophies through their personal creative practice. We encourage them to work as ‘thinking artists’ who will become acutely aware of the ways in which their work is engaging with current understanding of performance theory and practice. The programmes combine specialist taught modules with a significant dissertation project that can include substantial practical work. This is ideal preparation for those seeking to investigate and interrogate their own practice, whether for professional performance work or for work in the creative industries.You can study full-time or part-time.

  Entry requirements: A good Honours degree or equivalent plus some theatre, dance or other performance-related experience. For international students, anIELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent is also required

  PROGRAMME CONTENT
  We have two core routes through the programme. The first, ‘Creative Practice’, invites students to engage with a range of spaces, issues, approaches and forms, providing an exciting opportunity to develop and to interrogate individual working practices.
  
  The second, ‘Performance Writing’, explores the potential that exists within contemporary performance for creating innovative and engaging imaginative writing practices. Both routes emphasise effective selfreflection and the locating of individual work within the diverse context of contemporary practices.
  
  Our programmes have always been a flagship for new performance work and, specifically, for exploring emerging issues in contemporary performance through both theory and practice.

  ASSESSMENT
  Assessment is by performance, performance documentation, essay paper, seminar presentation and dissertation.
  
  The dissertation offers two study options in which students are asked to choose between a full written submission or a written paper which incorporates practical performance.
  
  SPECIAL FEATURES
  We have three well-equipped performance studios, all highly flexible spaces and ideal for contemporary practice.
  
  The studios are supported by production staff with backstage facilities including dressing rooms, control rooms, a design workshop and costume and prop stores.
  
  Students also benefit from a range of visiting speakers, trips to see performance material outside the region and the annual ‘On the Edge’ programme of professional touring theatre, dance and music performance.
