  • Objectives
    Typography is a key element in the process of graphic design communication. This course is the only Masters level programme in the North West specialising in this essential area of study. Course content includes a history of typography in application and message, type and technology and type and image. There is also the option to use subject related software for type creation and application. The study programme is underpinned by theoretical and research methodologies and is designed to prepare students for enhanced employment opportunities or as a pathway for further research.
  • Entry requirements
    The course is suitable for recent art and design graduates as well as those currently working in the creative sector interested in developing advanced knowledge and application of typography. Graphic Design graduates looking to extend their knowledge and understanding of type creation and contexts in selected areas of study. Illustration graduates with a background in image based communication, to focus the relationship between type and image to give greater understanding of this relationship when working with type in industry. Those wishing to return to active study from industry who seeking to develop their own personal typographic language and philosophy Interviews are held throughout the year. Please apply early as competition for places is strong.

    STRUCTURE | The programme is underpinned with support from key typographic practitioners, internationally recognised leaders in this field, These practitioners have been involved with development of the course content since the initial research process.

    The course contains an element of teamwork with students undertaking typographic solutions in partnership with both 2D/3D disciplines. There is also professional, contextual and research content which are key issues delivered in modules across masters disciplines

    Students explore advanced typographic solutions across print and screen employing type in static and motion form.
    The programme explores the relationship and tensions inherent between type and image and also type as image in decorative application.

    INDUSTRY FOCUS | This programme has been written with extensive input and feedback from graphic designers and typographic specialists with international reputations. The course produces graduates with an extended and advanced knowledge of typography and a high level of creative skills , this in turn leads to greater employment opportunities

    MODES OF DELIVERY | Course delivery includes formal lectures, seminar presentations and critical debate as well as workshops, team-based and independent learning exercises, site visits, case studies, input from visiting professionals, and possible work placements. Material is also made available through the University of Salford virtual learning environment; Blackboard. Students are expected to be highly organised and motivated in order to maximise the benefit from the programme. Personal tutorials are held regularly as are module specific tutorials and informal ‘drop in surgery’ sessions.
