  • Objectives
    This course aims to prepare you for work in the software engineering and information systems industries, with particular emphasis on enterprise-wide information systems. The course will enable you to understand both the key technologies involved, and the wider methodological issues that affect their success in modern enterprises. Topics covered include methods for data and information management across the enterprise; methods and issues that relate to the design of enterprise systems; security issues; and tools and techniques for enterprise information systems development. You have the opportunity to attend regular research seminars on current topics within the industry which are presented by researchers, staff and visiting speakers. You are also supported by a number of research centres within the University who are actively engaged in innovative and challenging research work, such as the Communications and Software Systems Engineering Research Centre, and the Intelligent Systems Research Centre
  • Entry requirements
    The standard entry requirement is an upper second or higher class Honours degree in computer science, information systems design or similar. Applicants with good bachelors degrees in other subjects, but extensive software development experience, will also be considered.

    Course structure
    You take six modules. Modules available normally include:

    -Data Mining and Data Warehousing
    -Enterprise Information Systems Development
    -Information Security for Enterprise Systems
    -Information Systems Architecting
    -Research Methods and Project Preparation
    -Advance Software Engineering ced
    -Software Project Management
    -Large Scale 00 Database Software Development

    You also undertake an individual dissertation. This is a self-contained piece of work, which includes a literature survey placing the work undertaken in context, and a clear statement about the scope, objectives and methodology of the work.

    A thorough analysis and explanation of every aspect of the work and a detailed critique of the final result is expected. You also follow high academic and ethical standards in source referencing and citation.

    Assessment
    You are assessed by a mixture of examinations, practical projects, in-course written work, group design critiques and presentations.

    The course prepares you for careers within the software engineering and information systems industries. You can also progress to further study.

    -Full-time: one year, three days a week (Tues-Thurs)
    -Part-time: two years
