  • Objectives
    The MSc Sports and Exercise Science provides advanced study opportunitiesacross a wide range of the sciences relevant to sport and exercise, including physiology, psychology, nutrition and research methods. The course is designed to benefit both those who deal with sports science as part of their work (such as sports coaches, fitness trainers, therapists and other exercise professionals). It is also aimed at those with a general interest in understanding the scientific basis of physical activity, training and competition. The physiological response of the human body to exercise is taken as the central, unifying framework for the course.

    The MSc programme is run by the Sports Science subject group but is able to draw on the professional experience of staff in other areas, particularly those in the Sports Therapy and Nutrition Subject Groups.
  • Entry requirements
    The normal academic standard for entry is a Lower Second (2.2) UK first degree in sports science. Applications from related subject areas such as human biology and physiology are welcomed and will be assessed on an individual basis. Equivalent overseas qualifications will also be accepted. Proficiency in the English language is essential. If English is not your first language, you will require an IELTS 6, TOEFL 580, CBT TOEFL 237 or equivalent.

    Course structure
    The MSc is a one-year full-time course, involving 30 weeks of taught modules divided into two 15-week semesters starting in either September or February. The part-time mode follows a similar pattern over two years.

    As a full-time student you will take two taught core modules and four optional taught modules, as well as a research project and dissertation (worth three modules). For a Postgraduate Diploma you need to complete six modules (including for a Postgraduate Certificate, three modules (including two core).

    Core modules:

    -Advanced Exercise Physiology
    -Scientific Framework for Research

    Optional modules include:

    -Applied Sports Psychology
    -Exercise and Health
    -Sports and Exercise Nutrition
    -Performance Testing and Enhancement
    -To qualify for the MSc award you will need to carry out a Research Project and then submit a 15,000-word dissertation.

    Assessment
    Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination.

    An MSc in Sports and Exercise Science will give potential employees in the sports industry the edge in a competitive market. Alternatively, the MSc provides the perfect springboard to a research studentship and a subsequent PhD.
