    Programme

    This degree is approved as part of the training programme in orthodontics by the SAC (Specialist Advisory Committee) in Orthodontics Dentistry for those in possession of a training number awarded by the Postgraduate Dental Dean for Scotland.

    This programme aims to equip you with understanding, technical and diagnostic skills in the discipline of orthodontics. It provides knowledge and understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of orthodontics and is suitable for those seeking specialist training in orthodontics.

    It is a full-time course with a large clinical component, allowing you to undertake a degree in orthodontics working in a clinical setting, while enhancing your technique in research areas.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students will learn to:

        * diagnose anomalies of the dentition;
        * detect deviations of the development of the dentition;
        * formulate a treatment plan and predict its course;
        * evaluate the need for orthodontic treatment and carry out interceptive orthodontic measures.

    You will gain an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to treatment of adults, orthognathic, surgical cases and cleft-palate patients, and the psychological aspects relevant to treatment, while developing a scientific attitude and enquiring mind. Along with training in scientific methodology, you will carry out research activity.

    How You Will Be Taught

    The degree course begins with an introductory period of core topics. Following this is an introductory period in the laboratory to familiarise students with the facilities and the basics of wire-bending skills, appliance design and appliance construction and mechanics.

    This is followed by five structured terms of theoretical seminars and tutorials. Clinical care of patients is established early within the first term. There are examinations at the end of each term and regular essay exercises.
