    MLitt: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time

    This programme combines advanced study in specific subjects with the opportunity to carry out research with members of a highly research-active department. The MLitt is an accredited programme by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and counts as a "research preparation master's degree" under the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) scheme. Our students hold grants from the ESRC and AHRC, among other sources.

    Content

    You will take two courses from the following:

        * English historical linguistics
        * History of Scots and English in Scotland
        * Early English textual studies
        * Orality and literacy
        * Onomastics
        * Phonetics and phonology
        * Text linguistics
        * Intercultural language teaching
        * Semantics and lexicology
        * Sociolinguistics
        * Electronic resources for linguists.

    You will also attend courses in research skills and methods.

    The second half of the programme, from April to September, is dedicated to individual dissertation work, under the guidance of an assigned supervisor.
