Course Description:
MLitt: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time
PgDip: 9 months full-time; 18 months part-time

This programme provides students who have no previous knowledge of Scottish Gaelic to learn the language or, if you already have some Gaelic, to improve your language skills alongside pursuing your interests within the field of Scottish studies. Teaching is conducted in seminars and tutorials with acknowledged experts in the field of modern Scottish history and literature (in English, Scots and Gaelic).

Content

Core courses

    * Issues, ideologies and institutions of modern Scotland
    * Core structures of Scottish culture.

Plus a Gaelic language class at beginner, intermediate or advanced level.

Specialist options include

    * Culture and identity in the age of Ossian, Burns and Scott
    * Race, nationhood and ethnicity
    * Culture, politics and society in the Highland Clearances.

All students taking the MLitt complete a dissertation on their chosen research topic under the supervision of a member of staff with an interest in their chosen field.
