    Entry requirements

    Normally a UK honours degree (first or upper second class) or a UK masters degree. We consider candidates with other qualifications individually.

    You must have a relevant UK masters degree with a substantial research training element to apply for direct PhD registration.

    If English is not your first language, you must show evidence of English Language ability – IELTS score of 7.0 and/or a TOEFL score of 620 (paper-based exercise) or 260 (computer-based exercise).

  • Course description
    This course equips those graduates with a good honours degree with the skills needed for the demanding task of teaching in nursery and infant schools. It develops the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm you need to motivate young children’s learning.

    You study the core subjects of • English • mathematics • science • information and communication technology. You also learn the foundation stage subjects and curriculum. As part of the course you gain credit towards a Masters qualification..

    Much of your expertise is built through your school and nursery teaching practice, supported by University-based learning. Your first placement is in Key Stage 1. It begins with an observation week, followed by preparation days, culminating in a five-week block placement.

    The second placement is three weeks in reception, focusing on the transition from the foundation stage to Key Stage 1, including the literacy and numeracy requirements for younger pupils. The final placement focuses on planning, observing, assisting and then teaching in a nursery class.

    We offer the course in partnership with local and regional primary, infant and nursery schools. These play a key role in teaching and assessment, particularly in relation to your professional competence.

    Associated careers

    Successful completion of the course qualifies you to teach in maintained primary, infant and nursery schools in England and Wales. You may also take up posts overseas in teaching and related employment.
