    Research Project
    MSc students undertake a three month full-time research project. The project is conducted either in the Institute or in a co-operating pharmaceutical company or another institution (arranged by the Institute). The students must submit a well-argued dissertation and take an oral examination on the project.

    The full time MSc course in Pharmaceutical Analysis has been in operation for 38 years. It trains students in the range of analytical techniques used for the quality control of medicines. The course consists of a formal taught element running between October and April followed by examinations. The students then undertake a three month project and submit a dissertation at the end of August.

    The course is currently supported by an EPSRC Master's Training Package that provides five studentships for UK students. In addition there are two studentships supported by AstraZeneca which are open to EU students.

    There are currently 55 students attending the course with about two thirds being from overseas. About one third of project placements are in industry and the remainder of the projects are supervised by staff within the Institute.

    Virtual laboratories

    In response to a demand for continuing professional development by those working in the industry and those who for other reasons are not able to undertake a full-time course a web-based course has been designed.

    The web course makes use of interactive animations, quizzes and downloadable exercises to reinforce the learning points, which are contained in the notes. Hard copy of the notes will be sent to all students.

    The simplest way to demonstrate the methodology is for the prospective student to enrol ( go to the questionnaire page to enrol!) on the demo 'physicochemical properties' class and work through the example modules which can be taken without registering for the course.

    The postgraduate diploma course can be taken over two years and the MSc course over three years. The postgraduate diploma course requires three weeks of attendance at Strathclyde for practical training although for practicing analysts who can demonstrate that they have experience with a range of instrumentation it may be possible to gain exemption from this module.

    The MSc course requires a project to be undertaken, this project occupies three months on a part-time basis but may be taken over a longer period on a part-time basis. The project may be undertaken at Strathclyde, within your company if you are a practicing analyst or at some other approved educational institution.
