  • Course description
    Programme content
The programme consists of both core and optional elements. The core develops knowledge and skills in GIS and remote sensing. The optional element of the course allows students to develop skills in related areas such as environmental impact assessment, water resources management, environmental modelling and computing.

    Core topics include:

-ArcView and Erdas Imagine software training.
-Applications of very high spatial resolution satellite data.
-New remote sensing techniques including ground based and airborne LiDAR applications.
    -Spatial data analysis and visualisation.
    -Digital terrain modelling.
-Applied GIS and remote sensing project, working with a research or industrial partner.

Students submit a dissertation based on an original piece of research for the award of the MSc, but those not wishing to continue to the dissertation can be awarded the PgDip in Applied GIS and Remote Sensing.

    Assessment
The programme is assessed primarily through coursework including project reports, seminar presentations and reviews.

    Career progression
Geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing are now key technologies in a range of fields including: landscape and ecological surveying, water resource management, forestry and conservation and rural and urban planning. Employers in these areas expect prospective employees to be equipped with high level skills and to know how to incorporate GIS and remote sensing to solve real-world problems.
