    The MSc in Management and HRM (a route of the full-time masters programme) provides future managers with a grounding in how the key functional areas of Business are integrated in successful organisations. The Human Resource Management (HRM) route is designed for those with an interest in managing people, and builds on the core module in Organisational Analysis and Human Resource Strategy to develop the understanding and competencies in key aspects necessary for effective HR managers.
    We have recently introduced a new framework for our full-time Masters programme, covering some significant and exciting developments that have come about through consultation with our students, staff and alumni.* The new framework will facilitate greater engagement with external businesses and organisations, leading to an enhanced student learning experience.

    *This framework is not currently applicable to our MBA or professional suite.

  • Course description
    Course content
    The common core modules will help you to develop an in-depth understanding of current management practice and leading edge research. The specialist modules enable you to develop your skills and knowledge in Human Resources. The core modules and the HRM specialist modules have been constructed to reflect the national standards of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and are taught by leading figures in human resource management education.

    Specialist modules
    • HRM in International Organisations
      This module seeks to develop a framework that will enable the development of human resource strategies and processes that are appropriate for particular international business contexts.
    • Performance Management
      This module equips you with a powerful conceptual process for aligning employee contributions with the performance of the business.
    • Managing Training and Development
      This module provides the knowledge, understanding and competence for individuals to contribute to organisational effectiveness through appropriate T and D interventions in a range of organisations.

    How do you study?
    A variety of teaching and learning methods are employed including, lectures, seminars, case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities. As part of the course, careers advisers will run a series of workshops, where you can identify methods and strategies to enable you to effectively pursue your career goals.

    Induction
    We provide a comprehensive induction phase which involves looking at the resources and talents which exist within groups, the characteristics of group members, their decision making styles and their effectiveness. This is conducted via individual, group, in-house and outdoor activities, which include a mandatory residential course. This is an important part of the course and must be completed before module teaching starts.

    Assessment
    Varied methods are used throughout the course, including presentations, group work, management reports, and examinations.

    All of our taught postgraduate courses will now share a common delivery platform.     The Network Consultancy Project
    Designed to integrate and operationalise theory, the consultancy project provides groups of programme members with the opportunity to put theory into practice in a real life UK business setting. The module aims to develop the capacity to work as part of a management team through active participation in a live consultancy project, and to enhance the ability to communicate clearly; argue rationally; and apply strategic concepts to produce real business solutions - given time constraints and conditions of uncertainty.

    Career development

    As part of the course, careers advisers will run a series of workshops where students can identify methods and strategies to enable them to effectively pursue their career goals. The workshops will focus on both home and international students and concentrate on developing skills and occupational awareness.

    In-sessional English language support
    For those students whose first language is not English, the Business School provides in-sessional support for academic writing specific to the requirements of the course.
