  • Objectives
    It is aimed to develop the students’ knowledge and skills in critical care to an advanced level in order that they gain mastery of the speciality raising them to the level of ‘expert’. Implicit in this is the ability to be able to disseminate this knowledge to others.

    The course includes contemporary topics such as advances in critical care, outreach critical care, leadership and management, ethics of critical care and evidence-based critical care.

    Course Content

    The course is comprised of the following core modules:

    -Foundation of Critical Care
    -Care of the Patient Outside of Critical Care
    -Evidence-based health Care and Contemporary Issues in Critical Care
    -Research Methods and Statistics

    And additional modules:

    -Advances in Critical Care
    -Legal and Ethical Aspects of Critical Care
    -Clinical Leadership and Management
    -Education in Critical Care

    Course Structure

    Students may exit the programme at a number of points

    -Completion of 2 core and one additional module will lead to a certificate (PG Cert) in Management of the Critically Ill
    -Completion of 3 core modules and 3 additional modules will lead to a diploma (PG Dip) in Management of the Critically Ill
    -Completion of 3 core modules, 3 additional modules and a dissertation will lead to MSc in Management of the Critically Ill
    -Full-time MSc would be completed in 12 months. Students wishing to undertake the MSc programme on a part-time basis will be expected to take 2 - 4 years to complete. Only under extenuating circumstances, extension into the 5th year will be considered. Accordingly, it is expected that students undertaking PG Cert will take a maximum of 1 year, and those undertaking PG Dip will take a maximum of 2 years to complete.

    Each module will be assessed individually using a number of assessment tools. Module-specific summative assessment will be in the form of a 3500 words assignment with verbal or poster presentations. The dissertation will be in the form of a 15, 000 words (including appendices) submission

    The module assignments will be designed to assess

    -Ability to solve problems and evaluate:
    -Awareness of the concepts;
    -Ability to synthesise information;
    -Ability to apply new ideas;
    -Awareness of current and future trends
    -Critical and higher level thinking
