    Entry requirements

    Normal entry requirements are a minimum 2.2 honours degree or equivalent.

    We may accept applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements depending on their suitability. This may be assessed by • an interview and/or piece of written work • relevant experience • qualifications • commitment to study.

    International students
    International qualifications are suitable if they are equivalent to a UK 2.2 honours degree.

    You must also be able to demonstrate your competence in English language. Minimum levels include
    • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) overall band 6.0
    • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) Pass
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score 550 (paper-based) or 213+ (computer-based) or 79 Internet-based

  • Course description
    Businesses operating in environment-related areas are finding it increasingly difficult to compete. As markets become more competitive and complex, the demand for environmentally aware professionals with business skills grows.

    This course develops your business skills and knowledge in core areas including • policy • law • economics • finance • business analysis • management.

    You learn environmental techniques such as
    environmental management systems and environmental auditing
    • environmental impact assessment
    • project management

    The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredit this course. We also work with public and private sector organisations to make sure the course meets the needs of employers. Because of this, many assignments focus on work-based scenarios.

    The consultancy project module requires you to complete a project, often in partnership with a real organisation. Previous examples include
    • assessing the economic benefits for tourism of re-wilding part of a national park
    • site management plans
    • evaluating the environmental management systems of small businesses

    Field visits are also an important part of the course. Previous visits include regeneration schemes in Toronto, Canada, and post-industrial landscapes in Cornwall. We also make frequent visits to local sites in Sheffield and the Peak District.

    Our environment subject area has a proven research track record, attracting over £400,000 funding each year from research councils and industry. This funding means that we can invest heavily in specialist computing and laboratory facilities, such as our individually designed, environmental and soil laboratories.

    Our research also means that we can feed the latest developments and understanding into our course content.

    Typically you can find employment in government agencies, local authorities, or private companies keen to enhance their corporate environmental responsibilities.

    Many graduates achieve posts in the area of their choice, before or shortly after completing their studies.
