    The strong emphasis is targeted to successful integration of renewable and sustainable energy technologies into buildings, which requires an understanding of both design and technology and hence the close co-operation of architecture and engineering. The course is therefore designed to allow discussion and exchange of information between different disciplines and encourage novel and imaginative solutions to the challenge of producing environmentally friendly buildings.

    Sustainable Building Technology (Nottingham/Ningbo) (MSc)
    Duration: 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

    Course Content

    -Core modules provide an introduction to systems able to tap natural energy sources and also cover sustainable technologies and their potential for incorporation in the design and fabric of buildings.
    -Architectural students will have the opportunity to explore integration of sustainable technologies in design-oriented projects, while engineering students will pursue more technical-based projects.
    -You will be required to study the following core modules over the autumn and spring semesters – unless otherwise stated modules are compulsory for all students:

    -Energy Efficient Systems (compulsory for non-architects)
    -Advanced Environmental Design
    -Building Design for Different Climates (compulsory for architects)
    -Renewable Energy Technology 1 & 2
    -Ventilation in Architecture and Planning
    -Energy Conversion and Utilisation Renewable Research Project
    -Solar Architecture for Different Regions (compulsory for architects)
    -Modelling and CFD (compulsory for non-architects)

    In addition, the following optional modules are offered as part of this course:

    -Cooling Technologies & Applications
    -Advanced Topics of Heat Transfer
    -Air Conditioning Technologies
    -Combined Heat & Power Systems

    Finally, you will complete a 60-credit dissertation over the summer period towards the end of the course. This is your opportunity to undertake a major piece of independent research related to building and sustainable energy technologies under the supervision of a suitably experienced member of academic staff.

    Course Structure
    The MSc in Sustainable Building Technology is taught on a full-time basis over one year or part-time over two years.

    Registered full-time students are expected to be fully available for the course. Graduates currently working in industry are encouraged to apply for part-time registration and work towards obtaining Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Registered part-time students are strongly recommended to be resident in Nottingham during the autumn and spring semesters.

    This course comprises 180 credits, split across 120 credits’ worth of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. To be allowed to register for a dissertation, you must achieve an average mark of 50% or above in both the autumn and spring semesters.
