  • Objectives
    The aim of this programme is to increase the theoretical knowledge of postgraduate physiotherapists using a problem-solving and critical analysis approach in order to develop the skills necessary to be able to evaluate practice and so contribute towards evidence-based practice in the profession of physiotherapy. This programme is not a programme that provides initial qualifications for physiotherapy or HPC registration.

    Course Summary

    This programme is a post-qualification Master's Degree (MSc) for physiotherapists wanting to continue their professional development.

    All modules use a combination of distance learning (via the internet) and small blocks of on campus time. Associate students may take one or two modules without registering for the degree.

    Fees will be published after formal University approval, June, 2008

    Course Details

    The programme is designed in a flexible learning format that incorporates distance learning with small blocks of on-campus time. With this format students can study full or part time and days off from work will be limited to a few days per term. Accommodation at reasonable rates may be available on campus during the on-campus time.

    All other study can be done via the computer at a time and place of the student's choosing.

    Typical Modules

    The programme will incorporate four core learning modules (75 credits)

        * Research Methods
          Main topics of study include: philosophical underpinnings of research methodologies, searching and reviewing the literature, ethical issues in research, qualitative and quantitative research, experimental and quasi-experimental design, and statistical analysis.

        * Evidence Informed Practice
          Main topics of study include: evidence informed practice vs. best practice, examining the structure of research papers, examining published outcome measures, responsible use of evidence, understanding the purpose and process of meta analyses.

        * Teaching and Learning in Healthcare
          Main topics of study include: creating appropriate learning environments to facilitate a challenging and critical approach to practice, identifying specific learning needs of staff and students, planning, teaching and supervisory programmes, monitoring, assessing and reporting progress, evaluating teaching programmes, critical reflection and evaluation of performance.

        * Clinical Leadership
          Main topics of study include: models of leadership, qualities and functions of leaders in the clinical environment, motivating and influencing others, leading teams of equals, clinical engagement in NHS commissioning, developing extended roles.

        * Dissertation
          Students must undertake a dissertation project which is a major element of the Master's Degree. This project will be done in an area of the student’s choice and should reflect the student’s interests and specialisation. Dissertation supervisors will be Physiotherapy staff members who are skilled researchers and reflect diverse areas of speciality.

    Students will then choose 45 credits of optional modules in areas of interest to them. Optional modules may be within one speciality area or among different speciality areas. Specialities offered by the MSc Physiotherapy Programme will include cardio respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurology and management. Additional elective modules may be available within other MSc Programmes within the School of Health and Social Care depending on student’s area of interest.

    Students must complete either three 15 credit modules from the list below or one 15 credit module and one 30 credit module.

        * Neurology I: Physiological and Cognitive Basis of Motor Control, 15 credits

        * Neurology III: Clinical Application in Neuro Rehabilitation, 15 credits
        * Cardiopulmonary I: Acute Cardiopulmonary Management, 15 credits
        * Cardiopulmonary II: Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, 30 credits
        * Cardiopulmonary Placement, 30 credits
        * Musculoskeletal I: Core Science in Musculoskeletal Practice, 15 credits
        * Musculoskeletal II: Advanced Clinical Management in Musculoskeletal Practice, 30 credits
        * Musculoskeletal Placement, 30 credits

    Additional elective modules may be available within other MSc Programmes within the School of Health and Social Care depending on student’s area of interest.

    Assessment

    Assessments have been designed to reflect the knowledge of the programme. Through the process of assessment, the student will be required to demonstrate scholarly achievement commensurate with postgraduate study. Formal assessments will encourage students to critically analyze theory and research and evaluate relevance to clinical practice.
