Entry Requirements:
Candidates must have minimum of a lower second class degree and/or a relevant professional qualification, plus evidence of recent study and satisfactory references; or an overseas degree recognised by Aston University, plus two references. Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate a satisfactory command of written and spoken English before enrolment on the programme (demonstrated by an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher overall, but with no score below 6.0).

Course Description:
Introduction

This part time, flexible learning diploma offers Europe’s first university-accredited qualification in Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT). It is a unique opportunity for habilitation professionals to develop the specialist skills demanded by postneonatal hearing screen care. This course is designed to fit into the demands of work and home life. Holders of this qualification will be integral to a new wave of service provision in the UK designed to give parents and children real choice.

This course is a unique opportunity for practising professionals to receive extensive instruction and supervised clinical experience. At the same time, the course offers flexibility through blended, computer-based distance learning. The distance learning modules provide an indepth understanding of child development, and how and why this may differ in children with a hearing impairment. The role of hearing in development, and the scientific basis of therapeutic interventions for habilitation of hearing-impaired children are considered in detail. Students also develop skills for evaluating and interpreting research in this area, in the context of evidence-based practice. Practicum and professional issues modules then develop clinical competency in Auditory Verbal Therapy.

This course draws on the best international AVT practice and roots it firmly in the context of the challenges faced by families and professionals in the UK. Graduates can become part of a professional network of AVT practitioners in the UK. It is suitable for a range of professionals who want to develop their career.

The programme has been developed by Auditory Verbal UK working in partnership with the Psychology Group at Aston University. The University has internationally recognised research expertise in psychology and neuroscience, and a long history of clinical activity with paediatric populations. The programme aims to develop excellence in therapeutic practice that is underpinned by sound theoretical knowledge.

Distance learning modules cover the key issues in child development, and hearing and communication development, while an on-site module and clinical placement develop practitioner skills.

Assessment
