  • Course description
The Masters in Business Studies (MBS) builds on graduates’ existing knowledge and skills by introducing the fundamentals of business and management. The course is focused on equipping students with the essentials of business and finance to enable them to forge a successful career. A key element of the course is its practical focus, which is demonstrated in a 13 week management placement where students work alongside a company as part of their studies.

The MBS is designed for recent graduates, primarily of non business related disciplines who aspire to a management career and who are attracted to a postgraduate course which offers a sought after qualification combined with practical managerial experience.

In addition to the academic content of the course, one of the key features of the MBS is that it equips students with the practical skills required for a career in management. Skills such as:

        * The ability to communicate cogently in various media

        * The ability to debate management issues critically, rationally and persuasively then present and implement conclusions based on rigorous analyses

        * The ability to apply knowledge and skills gained on the course in organisational contexts

        * Interpersonal and team skills which are the hallmark of effective management

The skills are put into practice in a 13 week management placement in semester 3 of the course where students work with an organisation and write an academic project based on this work.

    tructure and Content

The programme is offered on a full-time basis for a one-year duration, starting in the Autumn Semester. The modules are intended to provide students with a thorough grounding in business and management principals.

One of the main features of the MBS is the opportunity to undertake a management development placement with a business or organisation in the third semester. The University will assist students with finding appropriate placement opportunities.

    Programme Structure

Students follow a modular course which introduces the fundamentals of business and management in semester 1 and builds on this in semesters 2 and 3 leading to strategy development and leadership.
