  • Academic title Aeronautical Engineering BEng/MEng
  • Course description Course overview
The courses are designed for students who have a fascination with flight and enjoy the prospect of being involved in aerospace technology. Aeronautical engineering prepares the students for an exciting and rewarding career requiring technical expertise, initiatives and management skills.

    Course content

    Year 1
Year one is common to all our BEng and MEng courses in aeronautics. It provides a broad foundation in engineering concepts with a slant towards practical applications. Core subjects studied are:
    • Mechanics of solids
    • Fluids
    • Thermodynamics
    • Engineering materials
    • Manufacturing methods
    • Electrical engineering
    • Engineering mathematics
    • Engineering management
    • Computing
    • Engineering laboratory
    • Engineering drawing and design

    Year 2
Year two includes the following modules:
    • Aircraft structures and materials
    • Aerodynamics
    • Mechatronics
    • Applied thermodynamics
    • Engineering mathematics and statistics
    • Computing
    • Aeronautical design and engineering management

During year two, students take a course in flight testing at Cranfield University. Industrial lectures given by experts from the aerospace industry are part of aeronautical design teaching.

    Year 3
The course becomes more specialised in year three, with increasing flexibility to follow subjects of particular interest through the choice of optional subjects, studying a year abroad or taking an industrial placement upon completion of year two. As well as group design projects, a feature of year three (and of year four of the MEng course) is the individual project, which allows students to investigate and develop, in depth, a subject of particular interest to themselves.

    Year 4
Year four of the MEng course provides further broadening and deepening in engineering studies and industrial and business management. The individual project, design and management study continues from year three but a more in-depth investigation into the project theme and multidisciplinary approach to engineering design will be required and the work must demonstrate creativity and innovation in problem solving. The group project in the final year must be sufficiently different from that carried out in year three. Students also have the opportunity to select a greater number of specialised subjects at Master’s level as well as a foreign language module.

    Teaching and assessment

    Teaching
The course combines lectures, laboratories and tutorial classes. During the first year the engineering applications course includes workshop experience, and design tasks. The courses are taught by staff from the Centre for Aeronautics, supported by relevant specialists in, for example, engineering management, as well as visiting staff from industry.

    Assessment

The course is assessed by a combination of coursework and end-of-year examinations each year. Promising students may transfer to the MEng course at the end of the second year, subject to approval from the course director.

    Professional placement and study abroad

    Placement year (optional)

Students may choose to complete an industrial placement year after the second or third academic year. A year in an industrial placement – a sandwich year – can be an invaluable experience. The student gains a greater understanding of the aeronautical engineering profession, and this may also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification. City
University London strongly encourages students to take this opportunity and, in collaboration with the University's Centre for Career and Skills Development, will help students find a suitable placement
