Applicants will be required to attend a taster day with assessment in English, Maths and technical skills or will already have achieved C&G 4101 Level 1.
  • Course description General information

    The motor vehicle apprenticeship is available for learners aged from 16-65 who are employed in the motor vehicle industry for a minimum of 16 hours a week. College attendance is on a day-release basis and assessment will take place in the workplace. Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their skills, understanding and knowledge of the subject. Training is provided through workshop sessions, tutorials and classroom teaching. On successful completion of this programme, learners will be classified as semi-skilled craftsmen. This course is nationally recognised, and provides stepping stones to further qualifications which combine practical skills and theoretical knowledge to provide a comprehensive understanding of motor vehicle mechanics and electronic systems. The course is modular in structure and is not meant to be related to a time scale, the Level 2 NVQ Certificate is awarded when the required number of competencies have been obtained.

    Course content

    In-house training will take place one day a week and regular assessments and reviews will occur in the workplace. Learners will work towards an NVQ level 2 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, a level 2 technical certificate in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, (a combination of practical and theory work), level 1 keyskills in Application of Number, Communication and IT, Health and Safety and Employers Rights and Responsibilities. The Standards for the competencies have been set by the Lead Body for the Motor Industry - Automotive Skill Council.

    Teaching and assessment

    City & Guilds externally set computer based multiple choice tests (on-line). Evidence must be provided of ability to successfully perform a series of practical tasks throughout the course.  The evidence can be collected at work, or by way of the realistic working environment at college. The completion of a candidate portfolio is a requirement.   The teaching strategies delivered suit a wide range of learning styles including ILT (Information Learning Technology), classroom based delivery, practical tasks and workshop tasks.

    Progression

    The successful completion of Level 2 will usually be followed by Level 3. Having achieved the level 2, Apprenticeship students will be classified as semi-skilled automotive techicians.
