Arts Policy and Management (MA - Postgraduate Diploma - Postgraduate Certificate)

  • Objectives These awards are designed for existing arts managers who wish to develop their practice and understanding of the background, theories and principles of arts and cultural management, or those who wish to pursue a career in arts management and satisfy other entry criteria. The degree explores the requirements and benefits of strategic management, balancing theory and practice within the context of the prevailing social, political, economic and technological environments. It focuses on public and voluntary sector arts organisations, but also addresses some key commercial sector issues.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Any of the following: a good honours degree in an arts subject a good honours degree in any subject together with experience of administration/management in an arts/cultural organisation three years’ relevant experience, for example in a senior management role in an arts/cultural organisation. Please note that for applicants whose first language is not English, an IELTS score of 7.0 is required for entry to the programme.

  • Course description MA

    If studying part-time, Year 1 of the programme provides a general grounding in arts management, including research methods and a work placement, while Year 2 provides you with the opportunity to specialise in arts policy, curating, arts education or arts marketing. If studying full-time, all elements of the programme are taken in one calendar year.

    Year 1: All students undertake the core programme including Arts Policy and Planning; Arts Administration and Management; Work Placement; Research Methods; and an option module chosen from the list below.

    Year 2: Students undertake core pathway modules plus a dissertation and a further option module.

    Pathway modules:

    -Arts Policy: Managing the Arts – Business and Legal Aspects; Cultural -Theory, Policy and Planning
    -Curating: Curating as Critical Practice; Writing for Curators
    -Arts Education: The Arts and Education; Arts Education in Action
    -Arts Marketing: Marketing Communications 1; Marketing Communications 2.

    Option modules:

    -Inside/Out: Managing Today's Arts Organisations
    -Creating Contemporary Exhibitions
    -Managing the Arts in the Digital Age
    -Staging Events and Festivals
    -Museum and Gallery Management
    -Managing the Performing Arts
    -Arts and Communities (alternate years)
    -Arts Management and Urban Renewal (alternate years).
    -Double modules in Financial Accounting/Management Accounting and Human -Resource Management/Human Resource Strategies offered through the Faculty of Lifelong Learning Diploma in Management can also be taken as options.

    Postgraduate Diploma

    As for the MA (above), but without the dissertation.

    Postgraduate Certificate

    Take the core modules Arts Policy and Planning, and Arts Administration and Management in term one, and then choose two option modules or a work placement in term two.

    Teaching
    Lectures, seminars, group projects, presentations and tutorials.

    Assessment
    100 per cent coursework – a combination of written work-related assignments, presentations, special projects and a research dissertation/independent study.
