BA Architecture

Objectives Architectural education at Plymouth equips students to be designers of buildings and their settings by fostering creativity and confidence, responsibility and sensitivity to people, places and materials. Graduates are able to contribute to many creative professions and many choose to complete postgraduate studies to become professional architects.
Entry requirements 320 points. A level/AS level/Vocational A level and a digital portfolio. Equivalent qualifications may be considered. Also at least five GCSE passes, to include English at grade C or above and Maths

Programme

Year 1

    * Gain awareness of your own creativity through drawing, model making, writing and verbal argument
    * Develop your skills, confidence and critical understanding of architecture and the environment
    * Work in the studio with your colleagues on design projects
    * Study the history and theories of architecture
    * In parallel, a basic grounding in history; theory; structures; construction; energetics and services is developed through lectures, seminars and tutorials and provides the intellectual stimulus for design innovation

Year 2

    * Engage in studio-based design challenges and explore building and place design in context
    * Focus on sustainable technology, materials and building performance
    * Study the history and theories of 20th-century architecture
    * At each stage you will have the opportunity to travel abroad and within the UK to study real places and buildings

Year 3

    * Integrate your ideas about form, place, use and appropriate technology in the studio
    * Complete high-quality presentations with computer visualisations and detailed models as part of the design process
    * Explore your concerns about architecture in a major essay
    * Investigate ideas about architectural conservation
    * Professional studies provides an insight into design practice, enabling you to become an effective, informed member of a team in your year out following graduation
    * Successful completion of the honours degree provides exemption from Part I of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Examination
