BA English Language and Linguistics

  • Objectives If you study with us, you might find yourself learning about the languages spoken by indigenous peoples in the remotest parts of central America or the Pacific islands. You'll almost certainly end up gathering data yourself, using digital technology to record the people around you so you can analyse how young children learn to use English, or how adults take turns to speak, or the way their pronunciation varies according to their age, gender, or social attitudes. You might well spend time analysing written texts too - whether it be medieval poems, fashion magazines, transcripts of children's speech, or newspaper articles expressing outrage about standards of pronunciation at the BBC.
