BA Film and Theology

  • Objectives This course interrogates cinema and television as art forms and as industries. It explores screen media texts, audiences and production contexts, giving you a solid grounding in film and television history, aesthetics, reception, and economics, as well as locating screen media in social, cultural and transnational contexts. The course jointly studies the sacred texts, history, practices and developed theology or religious thought of one or more religious traditions, enriching students? understanding of spiritual practices in diverse world cultures.
  • Entry requirements Required subjects: No specific subjects, but at least one of theology/ religious studies, film studies, sociology, English, history, politics, media studies, communications studies, art, theatre/ drama or a modern language at A level IB score: 32

    Programme

    Year one

    You will be encouraged to engage in multidisciplinary activity, in addition to undertaking core studies in Theology and Film. You will gain a broad foundation in the critical study of the Bible, the historical development of Christian thought, modern Christian ideas and the Islamic tradition.

    Year two

    In Film Studies, you will take two core modules, which will develop your understanding of history, industries and audiences. In Theology, you will explore in more depth a choice of areas including Jesus, Paul, Old Testament, philosophy of religion, political theology, literature and religion, and other religious traditions such as Hinduism.

    Year three

    The final year continues and extends the process of specialisation. In Theology, there is a wide range of choices for you to concentrate on, including biblical studies, theological ideas, philosophical approaches, or religious studies. There is a module dedicated to the theological understanding of popular film as well as an opportunity to undertake an independent study project. You will also write a dissertation during your final year.
