BA Film Studies

  • Objectives Film Studies at Bristol UWE enables you to understand cinema as an extraordinarily diverse set of practices. You will be introduced to a wide range of cinematic traditions, including documentary, British and world cinema, as well as Hollywood films and genres. Our programmes locate films within a broad cultural context so that you can explore the ways in which textual meanings and cultural identities are produced through the institutions of cinema. You will also study the political, economic, and technological changes that have helped to shape cinema history, from the beginnings of cinema in the 19th century to the digital innovations transforming it in the 21st.

    Year (Level) 1

    You take four modules at Level 1. You take Film Cultures and Anatomy of Film. We also recommend Topics in Film History as your third option. Your fourth module is chosen from a list of options from all the subjects offered by the Faculty including Criminology, Drama, English, English as a Foreign Language, French, German, History, Media and Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology or Spanish.

    Year (Level) 2

    You take four modules. Currents in Film Theory is compulsory and options can be chosen from a list which currently includes Hollywood, Contemporary Screen Media, British Film and TV Cultures, Film Genres, Women on Both Sides of the Camera, Video Documentary, World Cinema.

    You can also take a fourth module from a list of options from all the subjects offered within the Faculty.

    Year (Level) 3

    You take four Film Studies modules at Level 3. The Dissertation is compulsory and you also take three optional modules from a list which currently includes Issues in Contemporary Cinema; Cinema, Sexuality and Gender; Digital Cinema; Documentary Film; Latin American Cinema; Continuing Production; Music, Cinema, Culture; Cinema, Sexuality and Gender.
