BA Film & Theatre and History of Art

  • Objectives The central aim of the programme is to enable students to gain an understanding of film and modern theatre as cultural forms in their own right and in terms of their historical relationships, and a framework for examining changing categories of art, architecture and visual artifacts in different places and times. In Film & Theatre, students develop their critical skills through close analysis of films, plays and theatre performances, informed by contextual study and by critical and theoretical debates. In History of Art, they gain an understanding of the methods particular to art historical enquiry, and appreciate the changing nature of the discipline's concerns, priorities and approaches. In addition to the modules listed below, students who participate in staff-directed research productions may choose to be assessed on their participation and documentation for credits in place of equivalent coursework.
  • Entry requirements There are different entry qualifications for each programme. Some programmes require you to have a certain amount of knowledge in a subject before you begin the degree programme – this is called a ‘subject requirement’. Other programmes do not have any specific subject requirements. All programmes will, however, expect you to have reached a certain standard in your education and will ask you to achieve certain grades in your examinations. Most programmes have a standard offer so that you know in advance what you are likely to need. Please note that even if you have the minimum entry qualifications, you are not necessarily guaranteed a place on the degree programme.
