BA German and History

  • Objectives This course offers you the opportunity to study German language, literature, politics and culture along with international and German history. You will normally divide your time equally between the two subjects. Project work is introduced in the second year and developed in the third year when you will undertake a year-long Special Subject study based on primary historical sources.
  • Entry requirements Required subjects: B in German and History A levels, plus a pass in one AS level, if taken IB score: 32 (5 German and history)

    Programme

    Year one

    The German core language course develops the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. In addition, you take modules in Literature, History, Politics and Society, and may opt for modules in linguistics. In History, the Learning History core course introduces you to the discipline's practical and theoretical elements, and you take modules from the early medieval period to the twentieth century.

    Year two

    Your German language skills will be consolidated to prepare you for the year abroad. In German, you will take modules in literature, history, politics and society. There is additionally a wide choice of modules in German culture and media, and Dutch is normally available, as are modules in linguistics. In History, you will have a broad choice of modules, some of which can be in German history. In addition, you take the core Exploring Historiography module in which you work on a one-to-one basis with a tutor to prepare an extended essay in a more specialised area.

    Year three

    Spent in Germany or Austria, on a programme of studies in a higher education institution, as an assistant in a school, or on a work placement.

    Year four

    You will develop your command of German to a high level and use it in increasingly sophisticated contexts. You will also study optional modules drawn from the areas of literature, history, politics, society, media and linguistics and you may choose to write a dissertation. In History, you really get to grips with historical work during the year-long Special Subject study, based on primary sources. In addition, you take one from a broad array of specialised optional modules.
