BA Sociology

  • Objectives The aim of this course is to enable you to develop your own ‘sociological imagination’ by introducing you to a broad range of sociological research.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements: Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 180 points. Applications from students with non-traditional qualifi cations are welcome.

    Programme

    1st year overview

    Sociology may be taken as a major or a minor subject. Year one is designed to develop essential sociological knowledge and skills. Theories and concepts are illustrated with reference to everyday social phenomena. We currently offer the following modules:

        * Our Social Selves (Compulsory)
        * Changing Societies
        * Exploring the Social Landscape (Compulsory)
        * Sociological Wizardry

    2nd year overview

    Year two commences with a social theory module which examines the work of thinkers such as Baudrillard, Foucault and Giddens. If you are majoring in sociology you must complete a research methods module to prepare you for your fi nal year dissertation.
    Modules currently on offer include:

        * Explaining Social Life (compulsory)
        * The Local and the Global
        * Language, Communication and Interaction
        * Researching Social Life
        * Education and Society

    3rd year overview

    There are no compulsory taught modules, but if you are majoring in sociology you must complete a dissertation (the equivalent of two taught modules) based on a topic of personal interest. Modules currently on offer in year 3:

        * Crime and Deviance
        * Critical Health Studies
        * Sporting Lives
        * Sexualities
        * Youth in Society
