BA Youth and Community Work

  • Objectives The course is based on the principle that individuals and communities can change. It equips you to be involved in the empowering process of informal education. You will spend approximately one third of your time on placement in the first two years. The course includes lectures, seminars, tutorials and placements, while fieldwork and practice-based research promote independent learning.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements: Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 180 points. Applications from students with non-traditional qualifi cations are welcome.

    Programme

    1st year overview

    Modules give a theoretical and practical introduction to key issues, and include:

        * Social sciences for community contexts
        * Introduction to Youth and Community work
        * Developing interpersonal communication and group work
        * Anti-discriminatory practice
        * Introduction to Social Policy

    In semester two you will complete 180 hours supervised practice with young people.

    2nd year overview

    This year you will design and deliver presentations to seminar groups. The modules covered in semester one are:

        * Youth Policy and Practice,
        * Effective Groupwork
        * Management and Youth and Community Work

    In semester two you will complete 420 hours of supervised practice (35 hours a week). This allows you to develop professional skills and work towards a JNC qualifi cation.

    3rd year overview

    You can specialise by choosing modules including:

        * Global Youth Work
        * Conflict and Conflict Resolution
        * Feminism, Community and Social Welfare
        * Changing Welfare: Information Advice and Guidance
        * Managing People
        * Practioner Research
