Biomedical Computing Master Science by Research

  • Academic title Biomedical Computing Master Science by Research
  • Course description This is a flexible research degree programme based in the Biomedical Computing Research Group (BIOCORE). BIOCORE researches the development and application of intelligent computing methods (eg artificial neural networks, evolutionary computation, fuzzy logic and heuristics) for the analysis, interpretation and prediction, as well as for the design of biological, clinical, molecular and health-related investigations. Application areas are clinical oncology, methods of prognostic analysis in cancer research, and epidemiology.

    Current projects focus on the development of intelligent prognostic classification techniques; the provision of accurate clinical decision support and patient management strategies; the use of image processing algorithms for the quantitative measurement and future extraction of cancerous colonic mucosa; the analysis of the prevalent NHS breast screening procedures; and the design of a dynamic relational database schema to hold dental epidemiological data.

    Graduates may proceed to MPhil and PhD research, or to research careers in health or medical informatics within the health service and the pharmaceutical industry as well as in many developing areas within computing and information technology.

    Course content

    You will be expected to associate your research with one of the following areas:

        * automated assessment;
        * online learning;
        * changes over time in entry competencies in students;
        * work-based training and associated issues;
        * pedagogically-informed, computer-based solutions to educational issues;
        * innovations in the teaching and learning of all the subjects involved in the School; or
        * appropriate mathematics for engineers.

    The course can be completed in one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study, and is also available for mixed study, on and off campus. You will need to have a good Honours degree for entry on to the programme.
