BSc Genetics

  • Objectives Over the last decade, genetics and genetic technologies have had a major impact on the understanding of human biology and disease. This degree enables you to gain an understanding of major advances across virtually the whole field of genetics, including microbial and evolutionary genetics.
  • Entry requirements Required subjects: three A2 levels (including biology plus at least one other science, preferably chemistry); maths GCSE if not passed at A2/ AS IB score: 32 (5/ 6 Biology + one other sciences at Higher Level)
  • Academic title BSc Genetics
  • Course description BSc Genetics

    Programme

    Year one

Your first year will be a broad introduction to biology and genetics and is common to all degrees in the School of Biology. It introduces you to the biology of animals, plants and microbes and the biochemical evolutionary and genetic processes that underlie their biology.

    Year two

The autumn semester involves studies of molecular biology and experimental design and the spring modules include Molecular Evolution and Bacterial Genetics. In addition, you will have a wide range of options, including Science Communication, Medical Genetics, Behaviour and Ecology, Parasitology, Endocrinology, Photography, Pharmacology, Immunology, Neurobiology, Biotechnology, and Molecular Embryology.

    Year three

The third year includes a practical research project, which will allow you to carry out your own investigation in genetics. The course will also introduce you to advanced level studies in the control of gene expression, cancer genetics, DNA repair, developmental biology, microbial evolution and population and conservation genetics.
