BSc Human Communication - Speech and Language Therapy

  • Objectives * Provides professionally accredited training to gain entry to a career in speech and language therapy * Teaching is enhanced with lectures by NHS clinicians and educational specialists * NHS bursaries are available to support students who are studying this programme.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Five GCSEs at grade C (or equivalent), including English Language, Mathematics, and a science. Candidates must also have at least one of the following: * 280 UCAS points at Advanced GCE taken at one sitting (excluding General Studies) * BTEC/EDEXCEL (Advanced) National Diploma or Certificate at Merit/Distinction Level * Scottish Advanced Highers or Irish Leaving Certificate at an equivalent level * Mature applicants (over 21 years of age) must demonstrate evidence of academic attainment within two years of application, eg a Batchelors degree (or relevant Open University modules), Kite-marked Access Course (minimum 54 credits at Level Three) or an A level at grade C or above.

    Programme

    The programme is fully accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and graduates are eligible to register with the Health Profession Council to practise as Speech and Language Therapists in both health and educational services.

    The majority of modules are in speech and language therapy, complemented by modules in Psychology, Linguistics, Medical Sciences and Research modules. Students develop their clinical and professional skills in a variety of placements, including nurseries, schools, clinics and hospitals, working with clients from divers cultural ethnic backgrounds.

    Teaching staff are actively engaged in clinical work and research in communication disorders in children and adults. Students learning is supported by personal tutoring from other students on the programme. E-learning is integrated throughout the programme. Students are fortunate to benefit from bursaries available through the NHS
