BSc Medicinal and Biological Chemistry

  • Objectives This course is built around a central core of chemistry modules integrated with fundamental topics in biochemistry, pharmacy and pharmacology, leading to an understanding of human disease and its treatment. It offers high quality training in the principles and practice of synthetic and analytical chemistry, together with an appreciation of topics at the forefront of medicinal chemistry research. For the MSci with an assessed year in industry, students spend the third year as a paid employee of an industrial firm, undertaking research and core modules by distance learning.
  • Entry requirements Required subjects: three A2 levels or two A2 levels plus two AS levels with chemistry A2 level required at minimum grade B; biology, maths, physics to at least AS level preferred IB score: 32 (6 Chemistry + 5 in other appropriate subjects at higher level)

    Programme

    Year one

    In the first year you will follow introductory courses in chemistry, physiology and pharmacology, biochemistry and microbiology, including practical training.

    Year two

    You will cover topics in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry in more depth, as well as complementary courses in spectroscopy, biological chemistry, physiology and pharmacology including a case study on the development of a recent drug.

    Year three

    You will follow advanced courses in organic, inorganic, biological and medicinal chemistry topics as well as options in neuroscience, toxicology and pharmacology. Oral and written transferable skills are developed through a scientific communication course.
