BSc Microbiology

  • Objectives Micro-organisms play a major role in determining human, animal and plant health. Hundreds of genome sequences are now available, allowing exciting developments in the understanding of their physiology, biochemistry and their interactions with other organisms. In the final year you will plan a research project, undertake a literature review, and spend three full days per week in the final semester undertaking your research.
  • Entry requirements Required subjects: two A level science subjects (can include maths) IB score: 24-30 (including specified grades in science subjects and English Language)

    Programme

    Year one

    You take core modules in Microbial Physiology, Whole Organism Biology, Genetics and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics with Microbiology Specialisms, Food Safety and Microorganisms and Disease. You can also choose optional modules in the areas of molecular and environmental biology.

    Year two

    Second year core modules include a significant proportion of laboratory based work. These include: Bacterial and Biological Diversity, Medical Microbiology, Virology, Food Borne Pathogens, Medical Biotechnology and Introductory Plant Pathology. In addition to optional modules, you will undertake an extended dissertation module.

    Year three

    You undertake a year-long research project in microbiology that comprises of a literature review followed by laboratory work. The core modules are The Microflora of Foods and Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology and you can choose from a wide range of optional modules including: Mechanisms of Bacterial Gene Control, Industrial Application of Microbiology, Microbial Fermentation, Plant Cell Signalling, Plant Microbe Interactions and Plant Disease Control.
