BSc Physics with Nanoscience

  • Objectives You will acquire a broad knowledge of physics, while developing your expertise in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Taught by leading experts, you will learn: the skills required to manipulate and visualise individual atoms and molecules using scanning probe microscopy; how forces at the nanoscale differ from those observed in macroscopic systems; and what strategies should be used to build nanoscale molecular machinery. MSci students have the opportunity to undertake a major research project.

    Programme

    Year one

    The degree follows the same syllabus as the BSc Physics programme, except that the 'Introduction to Atomic and Molecular Structure' (F11AMS) module (offered by the School of Chemistry) is compulsory. The F11AMS module provides a solid grounding in the basic chemistry of bonding of atoms, molecules, and nanostructures. There remains the flexibility to take an optional module.

    Year two

    Students again pursue the same core as for the BSc Physics course but will also take the Force and Function at the Nanoscale and Molecular Bio- and Nanophysics modules (which replace two of the optional modules of the core course).

    Year three

    The final year adopts the same core physics as BSc Physics, but with modules in Imaging and Manipulating Nanostructures and Self-Assembly and Self-Organisation.
