Clinical Nursing MSc

  • Objectives The aims and objectives will prepare nurses to critically appraise contextual issues surrounding advanced clinical practice; have a deeper understanding of the structure and function of the human body and pathogenesis and clinical manifestation of disease; assess health status by history taking and physical assessment; diagnose the needs of the client, family and/or community; develop an evidence-based Health Care Plan (HCP), implement a treatment plan; follow-up and evaluate by ascertaining the effectiveness of the HCP in relation to client outcomes.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements: A recognised nursing qualification, and either a Lower Second class Honours degree, or the overseas equivalent, in a nursing or related subject, or an approved and relevant postgraduate qualification, and two years clinical experience as a first level nurse or higher Candidates who do not meet all of the above requirements may still be considered for the programme. For example, nurses with a track record of innovative practice, clinical leadership, research and publications may be admitted to the programme without having an Honours degree.   • Course description Course description

    The programme is designed for registered nurses who wish to develop their roles in preparation for advanced nursing practice. It offers the opportunity for nurses to develop clinical skills within the context of a modernising health service. Students undertake eight course units, including three units which address the knowledge and skills required for the assessment, diagnosis and planning/delivering care. There is also structured work-based clinical skills development, 15 days of alternative clinical placements, and a dissertation.

    Career opportunities

    This is a clinically based programme for registered nurses. It prepares nurses for taking on new roles in primary and secondary care that require advanced knowledge and clinical skills.

    Past entrants to the programme include nurse practitioners from primary care, nurse consultants and nurse clinicians from secondary care. The course has been designed to reflect the current changes in the NHS, and in response to employers' demands for advanced practice roles.
