Control of Pain and Anxiety (Dental Specialties) MSc

  • Objectives The programme aims to provide dental practitioners with the experience they need to provide high-quality, effective control of pain and anxiety to their patients.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements: All applicants will be required to provide evidence of their primary dental qualification from a recognised institution.Evidence of citizenship of an EU country will be required for those claiming home student status. The School also requires applicants to have at least two years' experience in general professional practice. Two academic references both must be signed and dated or they will not be accepted and both must be no more than six months old.

  • Course description Module details

    The programme consists of assessed course units, including:

    -Behavioural Management
    -Inhalation Conscious Sedation
    -Intravenous Conscious Sedation
    -General Anaesthesia and Medical Emergencies

    The PG Diploma programme includes a Research Methods and Statistics course unit. The MSc programme includes a research project and dissertation.

    Course content for year 1

    Semester 1

    Behavioural Management (15 credits)

    This course unit enables participants to understand the value of behavioural management methods of anxiety control.

    Inhalation Conscious Sedation (15 credits)

    This course unit enables participants to acquire detailed knowledge of inhalation sedation including pharmacology, properties and pharmacodynamics of inhalation sedation agents.

    Intravenous Conscious Sedation (15 credits)

    This course unit provides participants with the core knowledge for understanding and treatment planning for patients needing IV sedation.

    Semester two

    Alternative Route Conscious Sedation (15 credits)

    This course unit provides participants with detailed knowledge of, and the clinical skills required for, conscious sedation provided by alternate routes of drug administration.

    Systemic Analgesia and Local Anaesthesia (15 credits)

    This course unit enables participants to gain detailed knowledge of systemic analgesia and local anaesthesia and develop relevant clinical skills to manage patient pain.

    General Anaesthesia and Medical Emergencies (15 credits)

    This course unit enables participants to gain an understanding of the use of general anaesthesia, and knowledge and clinical skills in managing medical emergencies.

    Course content for year 2

    Semester 0ne (two compulsory course units)

    Research Methods (30 credits)

    This course unit is aimed at developing participants who are competent in the design, data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical or clinically related research projects. The latter may include basic-science projects in areas such as genetics, microbiology or biomaterials.

    Semester two (including the summer research and writing period)

    Research project and dissertation (60 credits)

    For MSc students only. Students have a supervisor who will discuss choice of research project and give advice and guidance through the process. Dissertation areas include the writing of a systematic review in any field of dental control of pain and anxiety or lab-based research projects.
