Course - Book repair and conservation: paper and cloth-bound books

  • Course description What is the course about?

    A structured course in the repair and conservation of cloth bound books. Paper repair will also be covered in the context of repairs in situ and to flat documents.

    What topics will we cover?


    Students will undertake two cloth rebacks and repairs to children's books. Colouring cloth and repair of corners will also be covered. Paper repairs will be undertaken where necessary and repair of documents will be demonstrated.

    &#8729 Re-back using paper or cloth.
    What level is the course?

    Students are not required to have previous experience in repair and conservation work, but must have a reasonable level of skill in hand bookbinding and be confident in handling materials and equipment.

    How will I be taught?


    Group tuition and demonstration and individual attention as required. Some handouts will be given, but students will be expected to keep and use their own working notes at all times

    Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

    Students must provide their own books for working on. The bindery is equipped with most tools but students will be expected to bring their own hand tools. Information and guidance as to special requirements will be given at the beginning of the course. Some materials will be available in class, and students will be encouraged to source their own.

    What feedback will I get?

    You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
