  • Academic title AS Art & Design, Critical & Contextual Studies after the first year of study, A Level after a second year of study.
  • Course description What is this course about?
    Are you curious about artists and designers? Do you want to find out more about the social, political, cultural and historical influences on art and design production? We analyse themes and issues in fashion, architecture, film, painting and sculpture. For instance, how feminist and or Marx concerns affect the political/philosophical or psychological readings of art. We look at how ideas of beauty change in different periods and cultures, how art contains layers of symbolic meaning for us to decode like a detective. The course involves both written and practical work. Take a look at a gallery of coursework produced by students on this course.

    There are no additional qualifications for this course and you do not need to have studied art and design for GCSE, but you should be open minded about different approaches to theories in visual art, design, architecture and fashion. You should enjoy writing and research.

    What will I study?

We look at how ideas of beauty change in different periods and cultures, how art contains layers for us to decode. The course involves both written and practical work

    What can I do after the course?
    Close to 80% of our A Level students progress to Higher Education. Alternatively, you could choose to enter employment.
