Entry requirements This course is suitable for students of all ages. No formal qualifications are necessary, but candidates should have a good level of general education and should be able to satisfy the interview team of their commitment and ability to benefit from the course.
Academic title BTEC (Edexcel) First Diploma
Course description     This is a one year, practical course in floristry and is an introduction to the key principles and practices which are an ideal preparation for work or for progression to higher level courses.

The course is an excellent foundation in the practical and essential theoretical aspects of floristry industry. Learners will produce a range of practical designs and arrangements for commercial, commissions and domestic situations. The course includes:

    Retail skills, floriculture, plant and flower design and care, researching period and contemporary design styles, window displays, wedding work, funeral work, special occasions and basic floristry skills.

    Learners will be advised about work experience, careers in the industry and progression routes in education. There will be a series of visits to trade shows, events and guest speakers and demonstrators to gain an insight into the industry across the UK and the rest of Europe.

Course Structure:
    Core Units are: Work related experience in the Floristry Industry; The Floristry Industry and Organisations Specialist Units are: Basic Floristry Display Techniques Assembled Floristry Designs Floristry Interior Design Flower and Foliage Identification and use Teaching methods will include lectures, demonstrations, an emphasis on practical work and assignments.

Course resources:
    There is a well equipped floristry studio. All students have access to Learning Centres at College Centres. This includes free Internet access.

Assessment:
    Assessment will take place throughout the year. There will be practical work assessments, written tests and assignments. Learners will build a portfolio which is part of the assessment. At the end of the course work is externally examined.

Next step:
    A BTEC National Certificate in Floristry or employment in a Florists Shop, Hotels, Supermarkets, Garden Centres or Hospital Shops or self employment.
